Giniling

This dish Giniling you don’t hear much about when you’re talking Filipino dishes. My mom doesn’t make this very often, but when she does everyone in the family loves it.

Beef Giniling

My mom’s version is a pretty common one, but I decided to make mine a little bit fancier and add red and green bell peppers. I even made a green bell pepper bowl to go with it just to make it more presentable.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Lb. of Lean ground beef
  • 1 Large potato diced
  • 1 Small onion diced
  • 1 Small tomato diced
  • 2 Gloves of garlic smashed
  • 2 Tbs. Corn oil
  • 3 Tbs. Soy sauce
  • ½ Green bell pepper diced
  • ½ Red bell pepper diced
  • ½ Tsp. Ground black pepper
  • ½ Tbs. MSG
  • Pinch of salt if necessary

Cooking Process:

  1. In large pan saute garlic in corn oil until golden brown and then add the ground beef.
  2. Break ground beef apart as it cooks, cover, and simmer for 3 minutes.
  3. Add onions and let them cook until they hit the shiny stage.
  4. Next add ground black pepper, msg, soy sauce, potato, and tomato.
  5. Stir, cover, and simmer on medium low heat for 10 minutes.
  6. Taste and add salt if necessary.
  7. Add the bell peppers and cook for an additional 1-minute.
  8. Serve with rice and enjoy!

Note: Also try the Turo-Turo Style Giniling. Check it out!

Optional:

To make the bell pepper bowl: cut around the bell pepper with a carving knife in a saw tooth, jagged edge pattern. Remove all the seeds and rinse. Scoop the cooked ground beef into the bell peppers and arrange on an individual plate and serve it with white or fried rice.

Hi. You are a lifesaver! I was desperately looking for a recipe that would help salvage the 1-kilo lumpia mix I prepared last night and I can say that this is the perfect solution! Unfortunately, the lumpia wrappers here in Lopburi(Thailand) are different from those we have sa ‘Pinas so my first attempt looked very much like a banana turon. Now, with your recipe, I’ll just chop some potatoes and bell peppers and presto! Para na rin akong kumain ng Afritadang giniling ng Gloria’s Eatery, hehehe!

picadillo was mentioned in the movie, mighty heart where marianne pearl played by angelina jolie, cooks this dish while she awaits the return of her beloved, daniel pearl. thank u for this local version, but if u prefer it with bell peppers, i liked mine with whole olives, complements the richness of beef with the tangy taste of olives. try it.

My mom used to make this for me when I was little. I loved it. Unfortunately, I know suffer from debilitating migranes that are triggered by certain things and MSG is one of them. Is there any way to make it without the MSG and have it taste the same?

This is good. I dislike MSG so I replaced the MSG with a pinch of salt. And I added some dried basil…

  15. Sookie,

I don’t know what’s your reason why you dislike MSG, but adding more salt to the dish does not make it more healthier for you. I think too much salt is more harmful than a pinch of MSG. Don’t be fooled by thinking you’re not using MSG on a daily basis, 90% of what you buy on the market contains some form of MSG. I just thought I’d let you know that just in case you weren’t aware of it. 🙂

Uhm, I DO make this dish quite often (and I find it quite wonderful, even though I just got it from my Filipino parents) and don’t usually make it with MSG. It’s not that MSG doesn’t add flavour, but it’s unrecommended if you want a nice healthy meal, which the giniling already is, provided that it has meat and vegetables and rice already (protein, minerals, and carbs). It would be wonderful to serve with an egg if it’s for breakfast. 🙂

I forgot to include bell pepper in the list, my helper went to the nearest little market blocks from here. Then I read tina’s “tangy taste of olives”. I always keep a bottle. And viola, she proactively bought green peas now.The more colorful, the more nutritious!
